Before we attempted any of the Smithsonian museums, we started with the castle. It was the very first Smithsonian building and now houses the administrative offices, as well as functioning as a welcome and information center.

It also displays an eclectic collection of items from their archives in addition to the remains of James Smithson, the founder of the Smithsonian Institute.

This was really unexpected and kind of creeped me out! But I guess it's fitting that he spends eternity here at the institution he founded.
In case you go, the museums don't open until 10:00 a.m. The castle opens at 8:45 and there's a little cafe where you can get coffee and a bite to eat while waiting. After getting a map, we were able to take the extra time to plan out our attack on the museums. Wanting to minimize our walking, don't you know!
Until next time...
